It’s the middle of the day. The sun is at its highest point and shining brightly as the warmth of the sun heats the horizon. Suddenly, a chill hits the air. And in an instant, darkness falls over the entire land. Nothing will ever be the same.
the absence of light
the inability to see what lies right in front of you
the fear of what surrounds you
the uncertainty of safety.
It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three, because the sun’s light had failed. (Luke 23: 44-45)
In this very moment of Jesus’ life, a supernatural darkness fell across the land. A darkness that would remain as the light of the world breathed His last breath; the darkness that caused so many before and so many after him to stumble and struggle to put one foot in front of the other; the darkness that blurred the vision of His people; the darkness that brought panic and paralyzing fear; the darkness of sin and death carried on the shoulders of Christ the Savior.
We are assured that in this life, we will have troubles. We will walk through hard and difficult times. We will be faced with fear and despair. We will face the empty void of darkness. We will struggle to put one foot in front of the other as the darkness falls around us. But praise Him that our story doesn’t end with the darkness! The darkest moment in Jesus’ life is where our story of hope and eternity begins!
“I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me would not remain in darkness.” John 12: 46
It’s early morning. The sun has just begun to peek over the horizon as a new day begins to set in. The chill of the air begins to warm. The darkness that had fallen is overtaken. The shadows slowly begin to fade as light kisses all of creation.
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed light lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead. He is not here; he has risen!” Luke 24:1-6
The Light of the World put darkness to death with his Resurrection. Our hope is alive! We have been raised with Christ. When the darkness surrounds us, we can hold on to hope. Death is defeated. The King is alive!
The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:4-5
His light shines for us all. Darkness will not triumph. Hold onto hope.
